The Hindu : NATIONAL / KERALA : Dental residents plan hunger stir

The All Kerala Dental Residents Union, on Saturday, decided to launch an indefinite hunger strike from Monday demanding an increase in the stipend of postgraduate students.

Members of the All Kerala Dental House Surgeons Association will join the protest, to be held in Thiruvananthapuram.

In a statement here on Saturday, leaders of the organisation said the State government was ignoring the demands of the association though its members had been staging an agitation for the past six days. “The Health Minister had earlier promised that the revision of existing stipend will come into effect from October 20, 2010,” they said.

As part of intensifying the stir, the representatives of the union and the association from Kozhikode, Kottayam, and Thiruvananthapuram government dental colleges will join the hunger strike in front of the Secretariat. The association will seek the support of other organisations in the sector.

‘Indifference'

Prasanth Sony, State president of the union, said the indifference of the government to considering a revision in the stipend was badly affecting the service mentality of students. “If the strike continues, it will affect the functioning of outpatient, evening clinic, and emergency services in the medical college casualty,” he warned.

Expressing solidarity with the indefinite hunger stir, members of the union in the district organised a protest meet on the Government Medical College campus on Saturday. Organisation leaders Sanjith George and executive committee member Ajay led the protest.
